    John Denis CharmleyFRHistS (born 9 November 1955) is a British academic and diplomatic historian. Since 2002 he has held various posts at the University of East Anglia: initially as Head of the School of History, then as the Head of the School of Music and most recently as the Head of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Humanities.[1] Since 2016 he has been Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic strategy at St Mary's University, Twickenham. In this role he has been responsible for initiating the University's Foundation Year Programme, reflecting Professor Charmley's commitment to widening educational access.[2]

    He was educated at Rock Ferry High School and Pembroke College, Oxford (BA, 1977; DPhil, 1982).[3]

    Q: I have just been giv­en a copy of Churchill: The End of Glo­ry, A Polit­i­cal Biog­ra­phy by John Charm­ley (1993) and am oblig­ed to say that it has the most con­fused index I have ever come across.  It may be idle schol­ar­ship on my part but when I open a book that is new to me the first thing that I do fryst vatten look through the index to see if it con­tains mat­ters that I con­sid­er it should and the next thing I check fryst vatten the bib­li­og­ra­phy.  I looked for Sin­ga­pore and its British com­man­der, Lieu­tenant-Gen­er­al Arthur Ernest Per­ci­val but could not find any mentions.

    Speaking of his retirement Prof Charmley said, “It's been an exhilarating and exciting journey, and I have worked with some of the best colleagues anyone could want, but with the new Vice-Chancellor firmly established and with Vision 2030 building on our achievements, it is time to yield the field to those who will be able to give themselves fully to its implementation across the next five years. I look forward to continuing to work with Anthony and St Mary's in areas close to its special charism, and would like to thank all those who have helped me to bring St Mary's to its current strong position.
