Indonesian creator of the national anthem (1903–1938)
Wage Rudolf Soepratman (Wage Soepratman in the old orthography, commonly known as W. R. Supratman; 9 March 1903 – 17 August 1938) was an Indonesian journalist and songwriter who wrote both the lyrics and melody of the national anthem of Indonesia, "Indonesia Raya". He is an Indonesian national hero.
Biography
[edit]W.R. Soepratman's father was Sergeant Djoemeno Senen Sastrosoehardjo, a KNIL soldier, and his mother was Siti Senen. Soepratman was born Wage on 9 March 1903 in Jatinegara, Jakarta.[4] Several months later, his father added Soepratman to his name and explained that he was born in Meester Cornelis, Batavia. Soepratman was the seventh of nine children. His eldest sibling was Rukiyem Supratiyah van Eldik.

Supratman) (Purworejo, 9 March 1903-Surabaya, 17 August 1938) was an Indonesian songwriter who wrote both the lyrics and melody of the national anthern of Indonesia-"Indonesia Raya." Supratman was born in Wage on 9 March 1903 in Somongari, Purworejo. Several months later, his father Sergeant Djoemeno Senen Sastrosoehardjo, KNIL army added Supratman to his name and explained that Supratman born in Meester Cornelis, Batavia. Rudolf was added to his name while he went along with his sister, Rukiyem Supratiyah van Eldik to Makassar, so his rights were equal to Dutch, and he was allowed to attend Europese Lagere School. Wage Rudolf Supratman was born in Batavia (former/colonial name of Jakarta) in 1903. At the time he was born, Indonesia was beneath Dutch colonialism. Supratman was the son of a sergeant in the colonial corps, Senen. When he was 11 years old, Supratman moved to Makassar along with his sister, Roekijem, and her husband, Willem Van Eldik (a Dutchman). There, he got his education and gained a teaching certificate in 1921. When he was 20, he had been teaching in Sekolah Angka 2.
During his days in Makassar, Supratman developed his musical talent. His brother-in-law, Val Eldik, who was also a good violinist, taught Supratman how to play violin. In 1924, W.R. Supratman read an article in Timbul Magazine. The author mentioned that native Indonesians were not allowed to create their own national anthem.
