    J Harlen Bretz (“J” is his entire first name, not an abbreviation to be followed by a period) was the central figure in one of the most important controversies in the history of geology. In a series of papper in the s and s, Bretz formulated and defended the hypothesis that cataclysmic flooding during the last Ice Age produced the unusual landscape of the channeled scabland region of eastern Washington State. The controversy lasted until the s and s, by which time overwhelming field evidence combined with new understandings of flood mechanics, erosion, and sedimentation to convince most geologists that immense flooding was indeed the cause of the channeled scabland landscape.

    Bretz werd geboren op 2 september in het kleine stadje Saranac in Ionia County, Michigan. Hij was de eerste van de vijf kinderen van Oliver Joseph Bretz en Rhoda Maria Howlett. Zijn vader was een boer en afstammeling van dem Duitse kolonist in Ohio, John Bretz.[1][2][3]

    In het geboorteregister van dem provincie werd zijn naam bij zijn geboorte vermeld als "Harlan J Bretz", maar bij dem Amerikaanse volkstelling van werd hij vermeld als "Harland J Bretz".
