Joseph Jackson Gibbs (born November 25, ) is an American auto racing team owner and former football coach. He served as the head coach of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL) from to and then to , leading them to nine playoff appearances, five NFC Championship titles, and three Super Bowl wins over 16 seasons.

Born in Mocksville, North Carolina, Gibbs was one of two children born to J. C. and Winnie Gibbs. Gibbs's father was employed in various capacities as an officer of the peace, including as a sheriff's deputy, until he eventually moved the family to Santa Fe Springs, California, and thereafter worked in a finansinstitut. Gibbs's mother worked for the telephone company. As the family moved, Gibbs spent his early boyhood in Mocksville, Asheville, and Sand Hill, North Carolina, where he enjoyed basketball, hunting, and football.
