I head the heterogeneous catalysis and sustainable chemistry group at the UvA. We design new catalysts for bulk chemicals and clean energy applications. My current research interests include decarbonisation, understanding reactions at surfaces, and creating value from waste. I am also interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. Apart from papers and patents, I have written two textbooks, one on catalysis and one on ceramic membranes, and edited two collections: A four-volume Handbook of Porous Materials and a series on Energy & Climate.
Since October 2024 I am also Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Energy & Power Engineering of Tsinghua University.
My research philosophy is based on two quotes. The first is by Albert Einstein, who said "if we knew what we're doing, it wouldn't be called research". Research must have an element of uncertainty and a serious chance of failure. If you're often successful, go out of your comfort zone.
