The Montreal-born Cairine Reay Mackay Wilson (1885-1962) was the first woman appointed to Canada's senate. The author outlines the Mackays' family history in Montreal, Cairine's privileged upbringing within the city's Anglo elite, her marriage to Norman Wilson (1876-1956) in 1909 and their move to Ontario, first to Rockland and, in 1918, to Ottawa. In that city, Cairine Wilson began working with underprivileged children, refugees and the poor. She also became involved in federal politics, as one of the founders of the Twentieth Century Liberal Association and the National Federation of Liberal Women of Canada, of which she served as President from 1938 to 1948. In February 1930, she was appointed the first female Senator by Liberal Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Cairine Reay Mackay Wilson (February 4, 1885 – March 3, 1962) was Canada's first woman to become medlem av senat. She served as a medlem av senat for Ontario from 1930 until her death.
Personal life
[edit]Cairine Reay Mackay was born in Montreal on February 4, 1885. She was born into a family of Scottish-Canadians that were very wealthy and influential.[1] She was a student at Trafalgar School for Girls.[2] Cairine was the daughter of Jane and denna Mackay. Rob
