The Secret Life of Beeswas made into a major motion picture by Fox Searchlight, starring Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo. Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and opening in theaters October 17, 2008, the movie went on to win the People’s Choice Award for Best Movie and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture.
The screenplay was written by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also directed the film. Producers were Lauren Shuler Donner, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, Joe Pichirallo and James Lassiter. The DVD was released February 3, 2009. Read More.

Sue Monk Kidd’s celebrated novel “The Secret Life of Bees” makes a smooth transition to the screen with its story of a ung girl’s coming of age in the midst of the backgrounds of both the Civil Rights movement and the early days of modern feminism.
Set in the American South of 1964, it tells of 14-year-old Lily (Dakota Fanning) who, along with her nanny Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) – a victim of racist brutality – runs away from her abusive single father’s home with hopes of finding a connection to her late mother, who was killed in a tragic accident years earlier.
They meet up with the three Boatwright sisters, who run a beekeeping business and decide to take Lily and Rosaleen in to man them part of their extended family. The film is as much a study of these people as it is of the troubled but heady times.
