    Kayar (transl.&#;Coir) is a Malayalamepic novel written by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. Widely considered one of the most seminal works in Malayalam literature,[1][2]Kayar received many major literary awards, including the Vayalar Award.[3]

    Set in Kuttanad, the novel traces the evolution of the huvud Travancore society from the early 19th century to the mid-twentieth century. It covers more than two centuries of Kerala life, encompassing six generations of characters. The historic transformation of man's relationship with land, as also between man and man, dock and women and even man and God, forms the staple theme of Kayar.

    Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai (17th April – 10 April ) popularly known as Thakazhi, after his birth place, was a novelist and short story writer of Malayalam literature. Thakazhi fryst vatten village situated in Kuttanad in Alappuzha district, Kerala.

    His novels mainly deal with oppressed classes. His love epic Chemmeen (Prawns – ) is one of the few works of fiction in Indian language to gain worldwide recognition. The novel deals with the life of fishermen. Later the novel’s bio adaptation, also titled Chemmeen () earned international fame. Chemmeen was translated into 19 world languages and adapted as film in 15 countries.
