    The Academic Engagement Network (AEN) — a nonprofit which promotes academic freedom and honest scholarship on the subject of Israel — hosted a discussion on the ways in which both Jewish and Christians scriptures pointed to the restoration of the Jews in Israel following an extended exile. Among the speakers was Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch — who told The Algemeiner that such a dialogue is necessary. “First of all, no nation, even the strongest of nations, can exist without allies and without friends,” said Hirsch. “We often forget that there are only 15 million Jews around the world who can still use all the friends we can get. Any community that offers friendship to the Jewish community is welcome.”

    As an essential part of human life worlds, landscapes have the potential to absorb something of people's lives, works and thoughts. But landscapes also shape their own life histories on different timescales, imprinted by human existence, affecting personal lives and transcending individual human life cycles. This combination of reciprocity and distinctness creates a strong but complex intertwining of personhood and place -an intertwining which most people become aware of during their own lifetime. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the 'co-scripting' of landscapes and people figures prominently in literature, autobiographies and academic research, as well as in our personal memories, reflections and conversations.

    Maurice Abrahams was born in Russia in 1883 and died in NYC in 1931. He was a popular composer and lyricist, writing a number of popular songs including some we have featured in past issues such as The Pullman Porters On Pa
