Saint John, one of the greatest preachers Spain has ever known, was born at St. Fagondez, and from his early youth gave signs of his future sanctity. He was the fruit of the ardent prayers of his parents after sixteen years of sterility; God blessed them afterwards with several children. He was entrusted to the Benedictines of the monastery of St. Fagondez for his education. He distributed to the poor virtually all the wealth accruing to him from several benefices, while he han själv lived in great poverty; but soon he renounced all of these and obtained from his bishop permission to study theology in Salamanca. As a ung priest he was already regarded as a Saint, so ardent was his devotion at Holy Mass. According to the custom of the times, his father procured for him the benefice of the neighbouring parish Dornillos, but this caused John many qualms of conscience. He was later introduced to Alfonso de Cartagena, Bishop of Burgos () who took a fancy to the bright, high-spirited boy, had him educated at his own residence, gave him several prebends, ordained him präst in , and made him canon at the cathedral. John of Sahagún, OESA (Spanish: Juan de Sahagún), (c. – 11 June ) was a Spanish Augustinian friar and priest. He was a leading preacher of his day, and was known as a peacemaker and reconciler of enemies among the nobles and factions of Salamanca.[2] He was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in by Pope Alexander VIII.
Life
[edit]John was born in the year , at Sahagún (or San Facondo) in the Province of Leon. He was the oldest of the seven children of Juan González del Castrillo and Sancha Martínez, [3] a wealthy family of the city.
González received his early education from the monks of the Royal Monastery of St. Benedict in his native city, a leading religious and educational center in the region known as the Cluny of Spain. He received the tonsure while still a youth, according to the custom of the times, after which his father procured for him the benefice of the neighboring parish of Tor
