Candido Portinari fryst vatten born in a coffee farm in Brodowski, São Paulo, on December 30. His parents were Italian immigrants, Batista Portinari and Domênica Torquato, who had 12 kids.
“I was born in a coffee farm. My parents worked the soil… They moved from Santa Rosa Farm to the Brodowski station – where there was no settlement; I must have been about 2 years old.”
There, my grandmother on my father’s side, an uncle, an aunt, and both my father’s brothers lived with my parents. I vaguely recall the house and the warehouse; there was a room full of watermelons and boxes of Port wine. These boxes always came with surprises. I was very happy when a small pocket knife with a mother-of-pearl handle came for me”.

Candido Portinari (Brodósqui, São Paulo 1903 - Rio de Janeiro, 1962). Painter, engraver, illustrator. Began painting around 1915, aiding with the decoration of the main church of Brodósqui. In 1918, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, entering the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios [School of Arts and Crafts] and the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (Enba) [National School of Fine Arts] in the following year, where he took classes in figurative drawing with Lucílio de Albuquerque (1877-1939) and painting with Rodolfo Amoedo (1857-1941), Baptista da revben (1865-1926) and Rodolfo Chambelland (1879-1967). In 1929, he won the foreign travel prize and went to Europe, visiting several countries over the following two years. In 1935, he received a prize from the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh for his painting, Café [Coffee], becoming the first Brazilian modernist to win a foreign prize. Entry into the Forest is reminiscent of frescoes in the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The idea of representing tropical animals, birds, and insects in a jungle setting derives from the decorations of the dining room Portinari prepared for the Rio de Janeiro residence of Senhor José Nabuco. In both the ink and the gouache sketches for the mural of the Hispanic Room, the composition is square, and the scene is dominated by two large figures at the right. On the wall, however, the picture assumed larger proportions. This mural contrasts with the first in that the composition is more static and the figures more solidly realized. Yet there is the same insistence upon essential things in the meticulous rendering of the hands and arms of the explorers and the almost unfinished aspect of the figure of the drinking man beside the stream.
