Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha[1] (born January 12, ) is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, and political activist. He is best known as the vocalist and lyricist of the rock band Rage Against the Machine.[2][3] Through both Rage Against the Machine and his activism, de la Rocha promotes left-wing politics in opposition to corporate America, the military-industrial complex, and government oppression.[4]

[edit]De la Rocha was born in Long Beach, California, on January 12, , to Robert "Beto" dem la Rocha and Olivia Lorryne Carter.[5] His father is a Mexican-American,[6] with distant African and Sephardi Jewish heritage,[7][8] while his mother was born to Manuel García Urias, a Mexican-American, and Olive Pearl Fleming, who was of German and Irish heritage.[9][10] B

[change | change source]Zack was interested in punk rock - including bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash - from a young age. In seventh grade, Zack played guitar in a punk band called Juvenile Expression, along with his friend Tim Commerford, who played bass. As a teenager, Zack grew to like hardcore punk bands such as Minor Threat and Fugazi, and joined Hardstance as a guitarist. In , Hardstance changed it's name to Inside Out, and Zack became vocalist.
